Dust Mites![]() What Are Dust Mites? Dust mites are tiny creatures that belong to the same family as spiders - arachnids. They are typically 0.3 to 0.4 milimeters long and are not normally visible to the naked eye, dust mites feed on the dead skin shed by humans, the skin shed by an average human can feed up to 1 mllion dust mites. 1 single gram of dust can contain around 180 dust mites. Dust mites live in carpets, soft furnisings, stuffed toys and mattresses. Dust Mites in Mattresses Dust mites thrive in dark, humid spaces, so the inside of a spring mattress is the perfect breeding ground for them. The humidity they love is provided by the sweat you produce while you sleep and the open construction of spring mattresses provides plenty of space for them. Dust Mites and Allergies Dust mite faeces is among the most common triggers of asthma, it can also cause rhinitis, hay fever, itching, headaches, fatigue, rashes and eczema. The American lung association says that 50-80% of asthma and hay fever cases are triggered by a reaction to dust mites. What Can You Do?
