Natural Memory Foam vs Spring Mattresses

Spring mattresses provide support with a number of metal springs which push back against your body, higher quality spring mattresses use more springs but all spring mattresses experience the same problems.
  • Spring mattresses lose their support very quickly - 16% in the first year alone
  • The support provided by the springs is uneven and causes pressure points that result in poor circulation which in turn leads to tossing and turning and poor sleep.
The image on the left is a pressure map taken from a spring mattress, the colours indicate the pressure with red being the highest pressure, down through the rainbow with blue areas showing low pressure.
You can clearly see the areas of high pressure on the torso and lower back caused by the spring mattress.
The pressure map on the right is taken from a high quality memory foam mattress, the difference is obvious.

Mattress Firmness

Spring mattresses rely on multiple coils to cushion your body, absorb force and reduce wear and tear. The higher the quality, the more coils are used, with fewer coils, each coil must be thicker to take the strain. Thicker coils feel harder, while thinner coils feel softer.  A small number of thick coils produces a lumpy feel, while a higher quality mattress with many thinner coils produces a more even feel.

Even a high quality spring mattress cannot produce the even support provided by our natural memory foam because your body does not push down evenly at all points.

A coil system of the type found in most spring mattresses costs £10 - £15 to produce.

Memory foam can be made in varying degrees of firmness to meet your personal requirements, and whats more the support is evenly distributed. A firm memory foam mattress gives you the support you need without uncomfortable pressure points, and a softer memory foam mattress will give you the comfort you want without sacrificing support.

Drawbacks

Spring Mattress Drawbacks
  • Spring mattress cannot, by their very nature provide even support.
  • Very few spring mattresses are warrantied for more than 10 years.
  • The warranties on spring mattresses allow for a 'normal' body impression, this impression can occur in as little as 3 -6 months and means that the quality of support has deteriorated.
  • Spring mattresses do not help with proper spinal alignment during sleep.
  • 16% of the support provided by a spring mattress is lost in year one, by the end of year two many spring mattresses will have started to sag.
Memory Foam Mattress Drawback

  • Top quality memory foam mattresses like ours are expensive because high quality materials. Cost is usually directly related to quality becuase most of the cost is in the materials, not labour.
  • Cheap memory foam mattresses are made with poor quality foam containing toxic chemicals, aside from the health and environmental implications, they often have a strong unpleasant small which can last for months after you buy them.

Mattress Care

Spring mattresses must be rotated and flipped regularly to even out the wear, they can be damaged if they are folded or bent during this process or when moving home.

Memory foam mattresses require no rotation, flipping or maintenace to ensure long lasting comfort and support for many years.

Temperature Sensitivity

Memory foam is temperature sensitive, depending on the quality of foam and the ambient temperature they can take a varying amount of time to adjust to your body. Spring mattresses are not temperature sensitive.
